working well
UNIVERSITY PROJECT, 2018
Office syndrome is a worldwide problem where employees suffer health problems due to bad body posture and lack of exercise.
The Fled Pod aims to encourage exercise in the workplace through body stretching. Using the concept of resistance band and flexibility, initial ideas were created which further developed into the ‘Flex Pods’. These are seating booths which encourage staff to take consistent breaks through stretching and thus a healthier and happier workplace.
The Flex Pod allows workers to do three things: work, stretch and relax. The modular design makes it suitable for any open-plan office space as booths can be attached together. The table is foldable as it is wall-mounted, shelving lets users put away their belongings before taking a break from work. The central component is a standing desk which can be easily adjusted in heights, allowing anyone in the workplace to use it.
In regards to materiality, Glulam laminated timber will be used for the curved top layer as the construction material is readily produced in curved forms. Glulam optimises the structural values of a renewable resource - wood. Plywood and timber are also used to help support the pod structure. Whilst velvet is the fabric chosen for the booth chairs.
How to stretch at your desk:
An instruction of ‘How to stretch at your desk’ will be placed on the under-side of the table of the Flex pods. Users may be clueless of how to properly stretch and relax their muscles, therefore this will help guide them for safe and effective body stretching in the workplace.
